Abstract in English

Hydrogen is being currently used in conventional applications. It is also envisaged for future engines, electric cars or as an “energy carrier”. Large scale use of hydrogen, either in production, storage or transport, requires a detailed knowledge of the steels involved in each stage. Those steels should guarantee a safe performance of the materials and equipments as well as a safety operation for workers and users. Sad to say, there are many reports of accidents due to the use of hydrogen, some including regrettable human losses. Even if modern industry has at present available knowledge to avoid failures, the widely extended use of hydrogen continuously adds new applications and new challenges.. For the above-mentioned reasons the Institute for Sustainable Energy and Development-IEDS has invited Dr..José Ovejero García, certainly a specialist on the subject, to present the fundamentals necessary to understand the different processes involved in steels degrading which lead to cracking and failures. Dr. Ovejero García presents, in a didactic and understandable way, the specific mechanisms involved in the use of hydrogen, as well as extensive results in the currents literature. His own experience in hydrogen damage failures in steels is also comprehensively illustrated.
